Robert Rodriguez Thinks ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ Sequel Could Happen On Disney+

It’s tough to get a handle on where Robert Rodriguez will show up next. He might turn out a low-budget grindhouse flick, then deliver a noirish comic book adaptation the next, followed by kid-friendly superheroes or even a stint into the world of Star Wars. Recently, he won a lot of new fans with Alita: Battle Angel, the $200M CGI manga adaptation that saw him team up with James Cameron. While the film didn’t exactly kill it at the box office, cries for a sequel have been pretty loud, and Rodriguez thinks there  could be a path forward…in streaming.

Speaking with Forbes, Rodriguez says there are no Alita: Battle Angel sequels plans in the works yet, but thinks it could turn up on Disney+ someday…

“I think anything is possible. Disney bought Fox, and they have Disney+, so that is worth the conversation. I know other people would love to see another, and I would love to do another one. As far as where it would go or how it would be made, I think streaming has opened up many opportunities, such as sequels. It’s already a pre-sold concept, it’s already got a built-in audience that wants to see it, and then it’s delivered to them in a way that’s the easiest for them to consume. So, it’s not a bad idea.”

There has been a concerted effort to get a sequel moving, both from fans of the film and by the cast, including star Rosa Salazar. The film even found its way back into theaters during the pandemic and did quite well.

Even if a sequel was greenlit tomorrow, there’s a good chance Rodriguez would be too busy to direct it anyway. He’s taken his time spent on The Mandalorian and will spin it into a role developing The Book of Boba Fett. And he might have a new franchise on his hands with the superhero movie We Can Be Heroes that is out now on Netflix.
