Nicolas Cage To Play A Drunken Louisiana Dragon In Amazon’s ‘Highfire’ Series

At this point, we shouldn’t be surprised if Nicolas Cage takes on some weird role that’s uniquely suited to his offbeat public image. His career pretty much thrives on it, and honestly, his fans freakin’ love it. So when we learn that he’ll be voicing a drunken fire breathing dragon in a new Amazon series, the best response is simply “Yeah, that sounds like something Cage would do.”

Cage will voice the lead role in Amazon’s adaptation of Highfire, a fantasy series based on the novel by Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer. The title character, which Cage will be voicing, is a vodka-loving dragon who lives in the swamps of Louisiana and binges Netflix. The novel, which was published earlier this year, has been described as “True Detective meets Swamp Thing“, which should give you an idea of what the series will be like. Gritty, dark crime drama with a dose of magic.

The series is being developed by Davey Holmes, the guy behind Epix’s Get Shorty series that ran for a few seasons. He’s also written episodes of Law & Order, Shameless, and Damages.

Next up for Cage is an increasingly bizarre slate of roles. He’ll play a heightened version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Joe Exotic in a Tiger King series, and battle animatronic creatures in Wally’s Wonderland.
