TIFF 2020 Lineup Includes Regina King’s Directorial Debut ‘One Night In Miami’

We’ve already had a taste of what the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival lineup will look like, with Chloe Zhao’s upcoming film Nomadland making its unprecedented world premiere simultaneously with Venice. Now the full slate has been revealed for the festival which promises to be unlike any other, due of course to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s TIFF will be a mixed affair, with a physical and virtual component. But the anticipated, possibly awards-contending films are still there, and one that has a lot of people talking is Regina King’s directorial debut, One Night in Miami. The fictional film centers on a real-life encounter between Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge).

Also appearing this year is the Naomi Watts/Andrew Lincoln drama Penguin Bloom, Mark Wahlberg’s film Good Joe Bell from director Reinaldo Marcus Green, and Werner Herzog’s Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds.

Some of the TIFF films previously announced include Spike Lee’s filmed version of David Byrne’s American Utopia, Francis Lee’s anticipated lesbian drama Ammonite starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, the Viggo Mortensen-directed drama Falling (review here), and the Halle Berry MMA film Bruised.
