It seemed as though we were beginning to head in to another Golden Age for horror movies lately with studios like A24 and Blumhouse cranking out the bloody hits. After catching the trailer for Antlers it looked as though Fox Searchlight would continue on that track. Unfortunately, Covid-19 has delayed its release and once again we are forced to head back to the streaming services and DVD collections (VHS if you’re old school like me) to satiate that need. Don’t get me wrong though. There are a ton of amazing horror titles to be viewed on all the available streaming sites as of this writing but if I were to recommend just one to fill the time I would have to go with The Ritual on Netflix. The quick synopsis? A group of college buddies meet up for a hike in the Scandinavian forest and are stalked by an ancient evil.
Based on Adam Nevill’s 2011 novel of the same name, The Ritual is one of those films that just continually builds dread while never really showing you what’s just out of sight. By the time you know, it’s too late. So grab yourself some popcorn, kill the lights and enjoy the ride
