'True Detective' Season 3 Lands 'Green Room' Director Jeremy Saulnier, Plot Details Revealed

The second season of HBO's True Detective was as hated as the first one was adored, making the likelihood of a third pretty slim. But word started to get out the network was keen on bringing it back, and when the awesome Mahershala Ali decided to come aboard, fresh off his Oscar win for Moonlight, it was a step in the right direction. And now another very talented piece of the puzzle has been added, as Green Room and Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier has joined the series.

Saulnier will co-direct the season alongside writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto, and here's hoping he finds room to make one siege-esque episode similar to Green Room. Pretty please? HBO is being surprisingly forthright with the plot details, too, revealing that Ali will play detective Wayne Hayes in a decades-spanning mystery to solve "a macabre crime" in the Ozarks.

Not much else beyond that, like the number of episodes or a start date, but the combination of Ali/Saulnier/Pizzolatto is definitely promising. Then again, gathering talent has never been the problem, has it? I'm one of the few who thought the second season wasn't that bad, just wildly different from its predecessor. I expect Pizzolatto will keep the tonal swerves coming, but if all people do is compare it to the incredible McConaughey/Harrelson episodes then none of it will matter. [Deadline]
