'The Shape Of Water' NSFW Trailer Reveals Guillermo Del Toro's Monster Movie

Trust me, the timing of this new red band trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water isn't a coincidence. There has been a clamor surrounding Del Toro's dark fairy tale coming out of Venice and Toronto, with many proclaiming it the director's finest work yet. Well, for those of us who couldn't be at either festival, the latest footage gives us the best look yet at the merman (played by Del Toro favorite Doug Jones) at the story's center.

Starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg, the film follows a mute woman who falls in love with a merman held prisoner at a secret military facility. With the help of her co-worker she attempts to secure the creature's freedom. It's a tricky concept to pull off, but like Disney's Beauty and the Beast, the rewards could be massive if audiences take to it. I'm going to call it now that this will be Del Toro's highest-grossing movie without giant robots in it.

The Shape of Water opens December 8th.
