'The Current War' Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch Gets Charged Up Over Electricity

Benedict Cumberbatch has played his share of brilliant, powerful, strategic men who don't play well with others, from Sherlock Holmes to Alan Turing to Khan and Doctor Strange. Frankly, we love every one of his troublesome geniuses, and we'll probably love him again in The Current War, in which he plays someone we all owe a lot to: Thomas Edison.

From day one The Current War has had the look of an Oscar contender, and with the arrival of the first trailer we can see why. The premise is an intriguing one that not a lot of people know. Edison and his rival George Westinghouse were locked in a public battle to see whose form of electric current would win out. Everybody knows who Edison is, while Westinghouse's name...well, not so much, which should tell you all you need to know. Michael Shannon plays Westinghouse, with Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla, Katherine Waterston as Marguerite Erskine, Tom Holland as Samuel Insull, Matthew Macfadyen as J.P. Morgan, and you get the point that a lot of important historical figures are part of this story.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) is behind the camera, having taken over when Ben Stiller dropped out. The Current War opens November 24th.
