Taika Waititi On 'Thor: Ragnarok' Fitting In The MCU, Plus New IMAX Poster Released

Plunked right smack in the middle of the awards season is a film with no such aspirations, although that would be pretty cool if it won something. Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok looks like the funniest Marvel movie in a long time, and completely in keeping with the director's offbrand, irreverent sense of humor. While speaking with WGTC, Waititi talks about his priority on the anticipated sequel, which was to make his movie first and let other worry about it fitting into the larger MCU...

"My job is to make a film that can sit alone as a standalone piece that obviously I’ll be proud of. But I want it to be a film that, if it’s the only Marvel film you see, that it’s a great film and it’s a great story in and of itself. The lucky thing is that there are a bunch of geniuses who run Marvel who make sure that it even if it’s a standalone piece, it is part of a great big jigsaw puzzle that could be appreciated as a whole as well."

That's the right way to approach it, for sure, and other filmmakers have echoed similar sentiments. Shane Black was able to jump right in, make his kind of movie, and it worked within the platform of the MCU. James Gunn, also. Of course, it doesn't always work, as Edgar Wright will surely tell you.

Also, a brand new Thor: Ragnarok IMAX poster has dropped, and it will be made available at select IMAX screenings when it opens on November 3rd.
