Rian Johnson Has No Plan To Direct 'Star Wars: Episode 9'

In the wake of Colin Trevorrow's exit from Star Wars: Episode IX, the most logical name to emerge as a replacement was Rian Johnson. Of course! Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has been running into "creative differences" with a number of directors lately, but Johnson's run directing Star Wars: The Last Jedi went smooth as butter. But does he even want the job? Well, maybe, maybe not, but it's certainly not on his mind at the moment.

Here are Johnson's comments from the Japanese press tour he's on...

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode 9, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it…for me, I was entirely focused on Episode 8 and having this experience. Now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it. So no, I’m not really thinking about that right now. Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again, and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

Johnson sounds like he could be interested if approached, but that he's got other priorities right now. And honestly, so does Lucasfilm and I wouldn't be surprised if Kennedy waits until the end of the year to make a firm decision.  Once Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15th, and things quiet down a little, that might be the time when Johnson revisits any desire to take on Episode IX.
