Rian Johnson Emerges As Frontrunner To Direct 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

Given the earth-shattering news that Colin Trevorrow was out as Star Wars: Episode IX director, this update will be considerably less surprising. Deadline reports the early frontrunner to take over the job is Rian Johnson, who of course is the guy who wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Makes sense.

Johnson has been a steadying force for Lucasfilm since he came aboard, with none of the turbulence that rocked Rogue One or the Han Solo spinoff, or now Episode IX. So why wouldn't they turn to him to bring that same kind of influence once again?  Plus, it makes sense from a continuity standpoint, as he was the director who oversaw Carrie Fisher's final performance as Leia, and he would be in a better position to help transition the movies without her presence.

That and Johnson is just a damn great filmmaker who has proven himself capable of handling just about every kind of genre, and every size production, with professionalism.

So we'll see what happens. There's time, because Star Wars: Episode IX doesn't hit until May 24th 2019.
