Michael Fassbender Tracks A Cold-Blooded Killer In New Trailer For 'The Snowman'

I dig that Michael Fassbender tends to hit the awards season with unusual choices one wouldn't normally consider. Last year it was the attempted elevation of Assassin's Creed from video game to blockbuster. That didn't really work out. And this year Fassbender stars in the cat and mouse thriller, The Snowman, and I think there are designs to push this into prestige territory similar to Silence of the Lambs.

A new international trailer reveals a bit more of the chilly adaptation of Jo Nesbø's book. Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) returns behind the camera for a creepy murder mystery in which detective Harry Hole tries to stop a serial killer whose elaborate crimes will make your blood run cold. Fassbender stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Val Kilmer, J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, and Chloe Sevigny.

There are elements of this we've seen before, like the young female recruit and the case becoming too "personal" for the investigator, but I think this looks like it could be really good.  Alfredson paints quite a bleak picture when he wants to, and some of the images here look like they could've been taken from his adaptation of Let the Right One In.

Here's the synopsis: When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.

The Snowman opens October 20th.
