Anthony Mackie Joins 'The Hate U Give', Jack Huston Rejoins Scorsese For 'The Irishman'

Anthony Mackie has signed on for a role in The Hate U Give as shooting begins. He joins Amandla Stenberg, Issa Rae, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Common, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Sabrina Carpenter, and fellow new addition Kian Lawley in the film about Starr Carter. Starr is a 16-year-old black high school student who is driven to activism after witnessing the cops' killing of her unarmed friend. She is always moving between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. Mackie will play King, a local drug dealer. George Tillman Jr. (Faster) is directing.

It's been kind of a quiet year for Jack Huston, but business is starting to pick up. He's set to rejoin Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, the director's long-awaited film on mafia hitman Frank Sheeran. Huston starred on HBO's Boardwalk Empire which Scorsese exec-produced. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, Harvey Keitel, Bobby Cannavale, and Ray Romano fill out a cast full of mob movie heavyweights, the better to strongarm their way into an Oscar. The film will debut on Netflix probably around awards season next year, with a brief theatrical run to go along with it. [Deadline]
