Everybody knows the story of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, right? That's when rich miser Ebenezer Scrooge (or better yet Scrooge McDuck) becomes a changed man after talking with ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. We'll see Will Smith go through something similar this holiday season in the star-studded Collateral Beauty, with a new trailer that tries its best not to be cloying.
I'm not so sure it succeeded. Smith stars as a New York ad exec whose friends come up with an unusual solution, namely writing letters to the universe, to help break him out of a funk following a deep personal tragedy. Somehow he ends up chatting with Love (Keira Knightley), Time (Jacob Latimore), and Death (Helen Mirren). Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Michael Pena, Naomie Harris, and Kylie Rogers make up one Hell of an ensemble.
Directed by David Frankel, Collateral Beauty opens Christmas Day, naturally.
