Amandla Stenberg's breakout role came in The Hunger Games, when she played poor, dearly-departed Rue. The actress has done some pretty good things since then, including the Sundance award-winning film As Are You which opened at Sundance this year. Now she's heading back to YA territory and this time the lead role is hers.
According to THR, Stenberg will star in Darkest Minds, an adaptation of Alexandra Brackern's popular trilogy of novels. Kung Fu Panda 3 director Jennifer Yuh Nelson will make her live-action debut on the film centered on 16-year-old Ruby, who develops frightening telekinetic powers and breaks out of a government camp where others like her are being held in the wake of a pandemic that has killed most of America's children.
While it's still a gamble betting on YA movies right now this is still a major move for Stenberg and her biggest role yet. It's also an important show of diversity casting her in the role of Ruby, and hopefully that will continue.
