While Universal already has their own plans to bring a live-action The Little Mermaid to the screen with Chloe Moretz in the lead, Disney set in motion plans for an adaptation back in May. And now Deadline reports Disney's film is indeed happening, and what's more they've brought on Hamilton superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda and the great Alan Menken to provide the music.
No other casting or creative announcements were made but the duo of Miranda and Menken is a pretty good start, and they'll be expected to compose a combination of new and old songs for the Hans Christian Anderson adaptation. Menken has provided the score for numerous Disney classics, including the 1987 animated version of The Little Mermaid which is the one most people are familiar with.
So add this to Miranda's growing association with Disney. He's already attached to co-star in Mary Poppins Returns and he's providing songs for the upcoming animated film, Moana, due out later this year.
