Damien Chazelle broke out into the awards season a couple of years ago with Whiplash, an energetic flick that seemed designed to make our pulses race. Well he's back again with La La Land, another musical effort designed to do the same thing, albeit in a way that's much sweeter and with a lot less of J.K. Simmons screaming.
A new trailer has debuted and if the first one centered on Ryan Gosling's dancing jazz musician, this one centers on the vocal stylings of Emma Stone as an aspiring actress. Scored to the song "Audition", this sounds and looks like a swooning, heart-swelling romance and love letter to Hollywood. Here's the synopsis:
Written and directed by Academy Award® nominee Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND tells the story of Mia [Emma Stone], an aspiring actress, and Sebastian [Ryan Gosling], a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.
Also starring Simmons, John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Finn Wittrock, La La Land opens December 2nd.
