When the suicide drama Sea of Trees was first announced a few years ago it seemed like an obvious awards season movie. An acclaimed director in Gus Van Sant along with stars Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, and Ken Watanabe, it unquestionably should have been, but then it played at Cannes and...well, all of those expectations went out the window. The film is now set to open in just a couple of weeks and a new trailer hopes to convince a few people it's worth plunking down some coin to check out.
McConaughey stars as a depressed American professor who goes to Aokigahara, Japan's famous "suicide forest" to kill himself, only to encounter an injured man who needs his help. And this latest trailer is as somber as the rest, suggesting this will not be an experience for those looking to maintain a sunny disposition.
Sea of Trees hits theaters and VOD on August 26th.
