It became easy, perhaps too easy, to kick M. Night Shyamalan while he was down. Heck, some people kicked him while he was up, too, but they took great glee in doing it while the director was making some admittedly horrible movies. But where are those people now that he's back up again after last year's sleeper hit, The Visit? Will they now show up for his mysterious new thriller, Split, starring James McAvoy and The Witch breakout Anya Taylor-Joy?
While plot details have been kept under wraps, the film features McAvoy in the role of Kevin, who abducts three girls and holds them captive. They eventually learn that Kevin is just one of 23 split personalities, some that prove to be very dangerous. Fans of McAvoy are already going to want to check this out as his performance looks stunning all-around, while there are some definite Hitchcockian undertones to Shyamalan's direction. I would have liked to have seen what Joaquin Phoenix could do with the role but McAvoy looks to be doing some inspired work here.
Also starring Haley Lu Richardson, Betty Buckley, and Jessica Sula, Split arrives on January 20th 2017.
