There's a tinge of sadness in the latest trailer for Star Trek Beyond, and the reasons are pretty obvious. Only a week ago one of the film's main cast members, Anton Yelchin, was tragically killed and the feelings over that loss are still pretty raw. But the show must go on, and at least it means fans of the young actor will get to see him one more time in a movie of this magnitude.
Backed by a new track by Rihanna titled "Sledgehammer", this latest trailer for the Justin Lin-directed space epic is less energetic than the previous cuts. There's still plenty to enjoy here, though, and the action looks to have received an upgrade, no surprise given Lin's experience on multiple Fast & Furious flicks. Along with the regular crew led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and co-writer Simon Pegg, the alien villain will be played by Idris Elba while Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) co-stars as an unlikely Starfleet ally. Here's the synopsis:
After stopping off at Starbase Earhart, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.
Star Trek Beyond opens July 22nd.
