Nicolas Winding Refn Wants To Do A Batgirl Movie

Nicolas Winding Refn really wants to make a superhero movie, but only one with a female lead. A few years ago he lobbied for a Wonder Woman film starring his crimson-haired muse, Christina Hendricks, but obviously that never happened. Given the dismal opening weekend of his latest, The Neon Demon, chances are he'll never get that kind of mainstream shot, but that doesn't mean he's out of ideas. Since he can't have Wonder Woman, Refn told Business Insider he'd be happy to try his hand at Batgirl.

“God, I would love to make one, it would probably be great fun…I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity…What ones are left? You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl. Let’s get Warner working on it.”

Yes, I'm sure Warner Bros. execs are scrambling around trying to make this happen. Er, no. Now, I actually think Refn could make one of the most interesting superhero movies ever, especially one with a female hero at the center of the action. But WB probably wouldn't be interested in giving him the freedom to highlight his actresses in the manner he wants, nor would they want such a polarizing art house director now when they are trying to appeal to the widest possible audience. Refn has never proved able to do that, even on a semi-mainstream film like Drive. It's also doubtful a Batgirl movie is anywhere close to being considered as the DCU is very much in flux at this point.

Refn would be better off adapting a creator-owned property for the big screen. I would have killed to see him do a Jinx  or Jessica Jones movie, or maybe even J. Scott Campbell's Danger Girl. Something along those lines is more likely to happen than a gig with Marvel or Warner Bros. The last time he tried to go the studio route it was for a Logan's Run remake, and that fell apart before it could get going.
