As Warner Bros. overhauls the DCU after 'Batman v Superman' underperformed, one film they are doubling down on is David Ayer's Suicide Squad. The villain flick is still a couple of months away but already a sequel is in the works as well as a standalone movie starring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who is being seen as the potential breakout character. Chances are her movie would touch upon her symbiotic relationship with the Joker (Jared Leto). Robbie tells Total Film (via Batman News) about the psychotic pairing...
“She is a very cheerful, bubbly sort of person. A lot of the comments were like, ‘She has this unflappable sense of humor. She’s so bubbly. She loves the Joker so much.’ So I definitely didn’t want to lose that. Having said that, [David Ayer’s] approach is the much darker side of the story, so it’s a bit of both. Harley’s story is about her relationships — not just with him, but finding herself and her independence. Their relationship is nuts. It’s terrifying. She’s co-dependent with the Joker, and when you see that, you start seeing it as a mental illness. Harley’s relationship [with the Joker] is nuts. It’s terrifying. The trailers have done a good job of keeping the nature of Joker and Harley Quinn's relationship under wraps, so it will be interesting to see how it's actually portrayed and if it will be like in the Batman animated cartoons.
Meanwhile, a bunch of new photos have been released featuring Harley Quinn and the other members of Task Force X. Check them out below. Suicide Squad opens August 5th.
