Oh, did you forget that Monster Trucks was a thing? Before Paramount Pictures came up with the bright idea to turn Transformers, G.I. Joe and others into a gigantic cinematic universe, they had decided to make a bunch of movies featuring as many Hasbro toys as possible. And one of those was Monster Trucks, which stars Lucas Till most recognizable for blowing stuff up as Havok in the X-Men movies. Speaking of "havok", that's pretty much what this trailer promises, too.
Till is joined by a wild cast that includes Holt McCallany, Barry Pepper, Tucker Albrizzi, Danny Glover, Amy Ryan, Rob Lowe, Frank Whaley, and Thomas Lennon. So an oddball mix of rising stars, veterans, has-beens, and tabloid fodder; perfect for a crazy film about a Flubber-esque creature that somehow makes things go really fast. So basically they're taking the "monster" in Monster Trucks about as literally as it gets. The friendship between Till and the creature isn't too far from Spike/Bumblebee in the Transformers movies, and that's likely not a coincidence. Here's the official synopsis:
Looking for any way to get away from the life and town he was born into, Tripp (Lucas Till), a high school senior, builds a Monster Truck from bits and pieces of scrapped cars. After an accident at a nearby oil-drilling site displaces a strange and subterranean creature with a taste and a talent for speed, Tripp may have just found the key to getting out of town and a most unlikely friend. Melding cutting edge visual effects and state-of-the-art CGI, Monster Trucks is an action filled adventure for the whole family that will keep you on the edge of your seat and ultimately touch your heart.
Directed by Chris Wedge (Ice Age), Monster Trucks opens January 13th 2017.
