While there were some rumblings of reshoots to make Suicide Squad funnier (which David Ayer has denied) there is still a lot of confidence in the all-villain film to be the saving grace of Warner Bros.' troubled DC Comics universe. So far the trailers have all tested well, but the one aspect everyone seems to love is Margot Robbie as the psychotic Harley Quinn. There have already been cries for her to get some kind of spinoff, and it looks like that is what fans will get.
Robbie will reprise her role in a standalone film, but this won't just be about Harley Quinn. Nope, this one will also feature other female heroes of the DCU including Birds of Prey and Batgirl. Wow. Can Gail Simone write the screenplay, please?
This seems pretty early on as there is no director, screenwriter, or clue who the other co-stars will be. For instance, will Jared Leto's Joker make an appearance? With an ensemble like Suicide Squad this always seemed like a possibility, and Warner Bros. has to be commended for not sitting around and waiting to give DC's female characters their own movies.
Suicide Squad opens August 5th and by then we'll know if a spinoff is a good idea. [Variety]
