The last time we heard anything about Lynne Ramsay she was abandoning Natalie Portman's western Jane Got a Gun at the last possible moment, leaving the film without a director and really kicking off its production woes. That led to all kinds of legal wrangling that is too boring to go into, but it seems the We Need to Talk About Kevin director has found what she'll do next, and it's team up with Joaquin Phoenix on a promising new film.
Phoenix is attached to Ramsay's You were Never Really Here, which she will direct from her own screenplay. In what sounds like an interesting twist on The Equalizer, Phoenix will play a damaged war veteran, now a freelance rescuer of women trafficked into the sex trade. However when a rescue goes wrong in a Manhattan hotel, the violence and corruption unleashed against him stirs a thirst for vengeance. Oh boy that sounds awesome.
Like a million other projects right now, this one will be shopped around Cannes. With Phoenix and Ramsay on board it should have no problem gaining enough backers to get rolling soon. [ScreenDaily]
