Considering directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost are the duo behind Catfish, a documentary that exposed just how fucked up people on the Internet can be, it's perhaps no surprise they are the guys behind Nerve. The film is basically a thriller that once again exposes the online world as a terrible Hellhole, only this time it's a narrative starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco.
The first trailer for Nerve, frankly, doesn't look all that great, but the premise is at least interesting. Roberts and Franco play complete strangers thrown together by an online truth or dare game called "Nerve", in which watchers pay players ridiculous amounts of money to do increasingly dangerous things. It all starts off innocently, of course, but where is the fun in that?
So this is Schulman and Joost once again exploring the dangers of technology when put in the wrong hands. It's a subject they explored not only in Catfish but in a pair of Paranormal Activity films. We'll see how it works out for Nerve when it opens on July 27th.
