Michael Fassbender's first major role was in Zack Snyder's 300, so we shouldn't be surprised he's been drawn to franchises like X-Men: Apocalypse and Assassin's Creed, both of which he'll be seen in this year. But Fassbender has considerable dramatic chops, as well, and he gets to show them off opposite Rachel Weisz and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander in The Light Between Oceans.
Directed by Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pine's Derek Cianfrance, the film is an adaptation of M.L. Stedman's book about a lighthouse keeper and his wife who discover a boat carry a baby and a dead man. Unable to have children of their own, they raise the child only to suffer the consequences of that decision years later.
This has the making of another emotionally crippling effort from Cianfrance. He's always been able to get the most out of his cast and it looks like he will again with Fassbender and Vikander. The Light Between Oceans opens September 2nd.
