Nicolas Winding Refn has been promising us his horror, The Neon Demon, for a long time. And with each promise the anticipation to see what he could do exploring the "vicious beauty" associated with celebrity only grew. Considering the offbeat path his career has taken, starting with a couple of indie hits in Bronson and Valhalla Rising, to the slightly more mainstream Drive, then the polarizing Only God Forgives, it's been hard to figure out which version of Refn we'd be getting this time.
The first trailer for The Neon Demon has finally arrived courtesy of Amazon Studios, and as expected it is absolutely stunning; dangerously, seductively so. Even within this scant 90-second footage you can see two very different aspects of the story develop. Elle Fanning plays Jesse, an aspiring model trying to make it big in Los Angeles, only to encounter beauty-obsessed women who want nothing more than to devour her youth and vitality. It's then that the traditional horror aspects seem to emerge, and it looks like Jesse will be out for blood.
Also starring Jena Malone, Keanu Reeves, Karl Glusman, Bella Heathcote,Abbey Lee, Desmond Harrington, Alessandro Nivola, and Christina Hendricks, The Neon Demon opens in June, but it will premiere at next month's Cannes Film Festival.
