Live-action adaptations of Japanese manga/anime have had a rough go of it in Hollywood (How's that Akira film going? Oh wait...), but that may be about to change. The classic Ghost In the Shell is shaping up to be huge with Scarlett Johansson set to lead the film, and with shooting getting underway today the first official image of her as cyborg warrior Major Motoko has been revealed.
Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) with Pilou Asbaek (A War), Michael Pitt (Funny Games) and the legendary "Beat" Takeshi Kitano (Battle Royale) co-starring, the futuristic story follows the cybernetic Major and her elite Section 9 task force as they attempt to stop a dangerous techno-criminal.
Following on the heels of Lucy's $460M success, Johansson may have found a new home in the sci-fi genre. Ghost In the Shell opens March 31st 2017.
