While French filmmaker Luc Besson will always be known for his hit-man/assassin films like La Femme Nikita and The Professional, two of his biggest international hits were actually sci-fi films The Fifth Element and Scarlett Johansson's Lucy. Next Besson will embark on his most ambitious stab at the genre yet with Valerian, starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delvingne, and Clive Owen, and the first look at the film has arrived.
EW has dropped new images of the $180M adaptation of Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mézières' French graphic novel, Valerian and Laureline. The story is set in the far-flung future and stars DeHaan as a human temporal agent, with Delevingne as his companion from the 11th century. Together they take on an important mission to investigate the mysterious intergalactic city known as Alpha, and must be careful not to alter the timeline in the process. The film co-stars John Goodman, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, and Rutger Hauer, with Besson hoping to build this into franchise.
Valerian opens July 21st 2017.
