The Golden Globes is many things, but one thing it's not is a good indicator for the Academy Awards. But if it were, we'd be talking about The Revenant as the new frontrunner as Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's survival drama was the big winner at tonight's event, taking home the three biggest awards.
The Revenant won Best Director, Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and Best Picture, all in the drama categories. It's the division of genres that makes the Golden Globes a tough call, especially since The Martian was placed in the comedy field where it won Best Picture and Actor for Matt Damon. In fact, it's placement as a laugher was a recurring theme throughout the night it was so ridiculous.
On the other acting categories it was Brie Larson's performance in Room that earned her Best Actress in a Drama, and Jennifer Lawrence winning on the comedy side for Joy, defeating her best pal Amy Schumer for Trainwreck. Kate Winslet was part of a solid night for Steve Jobs, earning Best Supporting Actress to go along with Aaron Sorkin's Best Screenplay win. And in one of the highlights of the evening, Sylvester Stallone's return as Rocky Balboa earned him Best Supporting Actor for Creed. Coming away with a whole lot of nothing was dark horse contender Mad Max: Fury Road, which has to dampen its Oscar prospects just a little bit.
So it was a big night for Leo. Not only did he get another Golden Globe, his first since The Wolf of Wall Street a couple of years ago, but he also became a meme.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s face when Lady Gaga walked by him to accept her award is everything https://t.co/IUCN8ei1cd https://t.co/lWnCryxQi9— BuzzFeed (@BuzzFeed) January 11, 2016
