In the '90s Nickelodeon began a run of impressive programming that managed to appeal to both kids and teens, no small feat to pull off. Shows like Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats, Ahhh! Real Monsters and Doug were a staple for a number of years, and following the recent success of the latest SpongeBob Squarepants movie, Nick is looking to bring these characters back on the big screen all at once.
According to Variety, Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) will direct a film that brings those classic Nickelodeon cartoon characters into one film, titled Nicktoons. Hess and his wife Jerusha (Austenland) will co-write the screenplay for what is being described as a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? type of adventure.
So this is a pretty ambitious effort, but also a good way for Nickelodeon to reintroduce these characters and set them up for eventual franchises.
