The Aliens Are Back In First 'Independence Day: Resurgence' Trailer

It's not often that a major trailer debuts at a random hour on a Sunday afternoon, but Independence Day: Resurgence has bucked the trend and we're all better for it. Twenty years in the making, the long-awaited sequel from Roland Emmerich looks to be making a case that Star Wars and Star Trek shouldn't be the only sci-fi epics high on your radar.

While there's no Will Smith as Captain Diller this time around, the cast is still impressive with Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joey King, William Fichtner, plus Jessie Usher as Diller's son who appears to be following right in dad's heroic footsteps.  Practically all of the major returning players are seen in this footage, like Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch, but the highlight may be the soaring, patriotic speech by Bill  Pullman as former President Thomas Whitmore.

Here's the official synopsis: "From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996’s Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally."

"But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

Independence Day: Resurgence opens June 24th 2016. '
