It's taken a little while for director Derek Cianfrance to follow-up his ambitious (and underrated) tale of family legacy, The Place Beyond the Pines, but four years later it's finally happening. Next year brings The Light Between Oceans, which had previously looked like it may arrive in time for awards season but has yet to get an official release date. What it does have are a couple of new images, one showing the beautiful coastal landscape and another showing its equally beautiful stars, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander.
Also starring Rachel Weisz, the film is based on the book by M.L. Stedman and takes place in post-WWI Australia where a lighthouse keeper and his wife, who are having difficulty having children, discover a 2-month-old child and a dead body in a boat. Thinking the child to be a miracle, they decide to raise it as their own but face trouble when they return to the mainland.
The Light Beween Oceans will probably hit the festival circuit before opening in theaters. 'Pines' had difficulty finding an audience and didn't attract the same awards attention as Cianfrance's Blue Valentine, so we'll have to wait and see how this film is received.
