Cate Blanchett Is Joining Marvel's 'Thor: Ragnarok'

At this point it shouldn't come as a surprise when Marvel lures an unexpected A-lister for their cinematic universe. They've already got Benedict Cumberbatch, Bradley Cooper, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, and many others playing various superheroes and villains. But did anyone expect to learn that Cate Blanchett could be joining them? Probably not, and yet that's exactly what is happening.

According to Variety, Blanchett is in talks for a mystery role in Thor: Ragnarok, the final chapter of the Asgardian's trilogy. Blanchett, who has been receiving loads of awards attention for her role in Todd Haynes' Carol, knows a thing or two about appearing in huge studio franchises. She played the elf Galadriel in many of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and 'Hobbit' movies, and also co-starred in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The big question is who she could possibly play? Maybe Thor villain the Enchantress? That seems like the best fit but with the diverse Blanchett it could be just about any character. With Mark Ruffalo's Hulk expected to play a major role in a story set on a distant planet, it's entirely possible Blanchett plays a totally new character.

Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the mighty god of thunder when Thor: Ragnarok opens November 3rd 2017, directed by Taika Waititi.
