Naughty New Trailer for 'The Smurfs 2'

Even before The Smurfs brought in a smurftacular $560M at the box office, Sony was already cookin' up plans to turn it into a trilogy. But it was contingent on the first film being a hit, which obviously it was, despite it having fairly limited appeal to either kids or adults. My review was more positive than most, but there just didn't seem to be any positive direction a sequel could go, which may be why The Smurfs 2 just tosses the little blue munchkins in a very familiar adventure, only now it's set in Paris.

A new trailer for the film has been released, and other than the arrival of the evil Naughties (voiced by Christina Ricci and JB Smoove), nothing has really changed all that much. Gargamel (Hank Azaria) needs to capture Smurfette (Katy Perry) for one of his schemes, and in the process she learns how mischief can be kind of fun. But aren't the Smurfs already mischievous, some of them by nature? Eh, whatever.

Neil Patrick Hayes, Jayma Mayes, Sofia Vergara, and Brendan Gleeson co-star in The Smurfs 2 on July 31st.
