James Wan to direct 'Fast & Furious 7'

It's only been a week since word dropped that Justin Lin wouldn't be returning to direct Fast & Furious 7, and with filming set to begin this summer, they were expected to move quickly on a replacement. Brad Furman, Harald Zwart, and Jeff Wadlow were mentioned as final contenders just a couple of days ago, but Universal's choice turns out to have been someone different and completely unexpected.

Horror maestro James Wan, best known for low budget hits Saw and Insidious, will hop into the driver's seat. Universal has been considering a number of possibilities including Contraband helmer Baltasar Kormakur, but decided to go with Wan who has a proven track record. They've apparently known about Lin's departure for some time, giving them time to mull over their options. Wan is looking to score the rare summer horror smash with The Conjuring, reteaming with his Insidious star Patrick Wilson.

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are a done deal to return, along with franchise scribe Chris Morgan, penning his fifth installment of the street-racing series. Not quite locked down yet is Dwayne Johnson, but he's expected to be signed before filming begins. There have been rumors of his Agent Hobbs character receiving a spinoff, and that could still be an option. Universal wants Fast & Furious 7 ready by summer 2014. [Deadline]
