With filming on Captain America: The Winter Soldier about to begin, Marvel is busy putting the finishing touches on the cast. Robert Redford joining as a high-ranking member of S.H.I.E.L.D. was a pretty crazy move, and now a surprising villain has been revealed to have a role in the film.
UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre will play the French martial arts master, Georges Batroc, aka Batroc the Leaper. Batroc's first appearance was way back in the 1960s, and is a master of the French form of kick boxing known as savate. Batroc is an interesting addition in that he began as a fairly serious foe for Captain America, leading a band of mercenaries known as Batroc's Brigade. But over the years he's become more of a comical antagonist, his French accent and brash demeanor overdone to a ridiculous degree. He now mostly pops up only to get his butt kicked by guys like Deadpool, Gambit, and Spider-Man.
St-Pierre hails from Quebec, so this seems like some inspired casting by Marvel. Batroc probably won't have a major part in the film, as it will deal mostly with Bucky (Sebastian Stan) returning as the Winter Soldier.
Opening on April 4th 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is directed by the Russo Brothers with Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell, Robert Redford and Maximiliano Hernández starring. [LatinoReview]
