85th Academy Awards: 'Life of Pi' wins 4 including Best Director; 'Argo' wins Best Picture

After one of the most unpredictable seasons in recent memory, it all came to a head tonight at the 85th Academy Awards, a night full of enough surprises to ruin most Oscar pools. The eternally long show was hosted by Seth MacFarlane, who through a few jokes that pushed the edges of good taste, turned out to be a solid host, even if the musical and comedy bits went on way too long. Riding a tidal wave of momentum mostly due to Ben Affleck's being snubbed for Best Director, Argo took home four awards, including Best Picture.

The other big winner of the night was Ang Lee for his mesmerizing 3D spectacle, Life of Pi, honored four times including Best Director and Best Cinematography. Jennifer Lawrence's time is now as she beat out strong competition in the Best Actress category for Silver Linings Playbook.  As expected, it was Daniel Day-Lewis victorious in the Best Actor field for Lincoln, leading to the serious, refined actor cracking jokes with presenter Meryl Streep. Although most people don't normally consider the Sound Editing category sexy by any means, it was thrust into the spotlight tonight as Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall tied. It was only the sixth time in history a tie has occurred. It may seem odd to consider it a "shock" that Christoph Waltz won for Django Unchained, but the popular opinion was that Robert De Niro or Tommy Lee Jones had the late upper hand.

All in all, a fun but long-winded show that was capped off by a surprise appearance by Michelle Obama.  The complete list of winners is below....
