* We don't typically associate Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu with comedy, as his films have all been gritty and tragic stories on the human condition. The Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, and Biutiful director has decided to take a stab at humor with his next project, titled Birdman. Co-written by Inarritu and Nicolas Giacobone, the film follows an actor who once played an iconic superhero, who seeks to reclaim past glory and his sanity by mounting a Broadway play. Sounds great, and with a March start date eyed it's developing pretty quickly. As for The Revenant, which Leonardo DiCaprio is apparently circling? It's still happening, and don't forget about The Flim Flam Man which Sean Penn is interested in. Both are possibilities to be his next project after Birdman is completed. [THR]
* Ric Roman Waugh just wrapped up the Dwayne Johnson crime flick, Snitch, and now he's already moving on to something totally different. He'll direct and rewrite the boringly-named sci-fi film, Tipping Point, based on an original script by Todd Stein. The premise is certainly an intriguing one, set 100 years in the future where massive overpopulation has led to tight restrictions on having children. The penalty for having kids without a license is death, and a ruthless Population Control Officer named Solomon Cage pursues two fugitives only to discover that one is the love of his life who disappeared mysteriously years earlier, and the other is the 12-year old son he never knew existed.
* Back in September we learned that Iron Man 3 had added Chinese actor Wang Xueqi(Sacrifice), said to be replacing Andy Lau who had dropped out for personal reasons. At the time we were led to believe the role was for Dr. Chen Lu, who Marvelites will know as the Chinese superhero/villain Radioactive Man. It's now being reported that the role is instead Dr. Wu, a new one created just for the film. It's said to be a minor part, which is disappointing news if you ask me. Iron Man 3 opens on May 3rd 2013. [Deadline]
