After a ton of buzz before it hit this past Sundance, Stephen Frears' gambling comedy Lay the Favorite hasn't fared so well. The response was not positive, and despite having a top notch cast including Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, nobody is talking about it as a possible awards contender despite the late season opening.
A new trailer for the film has been released, and it has pretty much the same tonal inconsistency and flat humor as the previous one. Based on Beth Raymer's memoir about her time in Las Vegas, the story follows a woman who arrives in the city of sin with big dreams, but finds herself working for Dink(Willis), one of the biggest sports gamblers in town who has figured out a way to beat the system. Other than Hall flaunting her sex appeal a bit more than we've ever seen her do before, there isn't much here to like. Joshua Jackson, Vince Vaughn, Laura Prepon, and Frank Grillo co-star.
Lay the Favorite opens on December 7th.....[Trailer Addict via ThePlaylist]
