If it seems like every studio either has or is developing their own young adult franchise, well that's because it's true. With Twilight on the way out, Lionsgate, Sony, and Warner Brothers are milking the genre cash cow for all it's worth. For Warner Brothers, they hope to replace the juggernaut that was Harry Potter with an adaptation of Beautiful Creatures, based on the fantasy novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
EW has our first look at Emmy Rossum in her role as Ridley, the manipulative cousin to Lena Duchannes(Alice Englert), who discovers she has a strange supernatural connection to Ethan Wate(Alden Ehrenreich). As they begin to explore what binds them, they uncover dark secrets about their families and their South Carolina town. Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Jeremy Irons, and Kyle Gallner co-star, with Richard LaGravanese directing.
I don't know much about Beautiful Creatures, but I dug the first image we saw a few weeks ago, and dig the look Rossum is sporting here. Here's hoping when the film opens on February 1st 2013 it has a bit more substance than what we usually see from the genre.
