Batman and Bane do battle in new The Dark Knight Rises set photos

I don't typically follow set photos all that much, mainly because so much is added later on, but I'm eagerly devouring every single one from the Pittsburgh shoot of The Dark Knight Rises. Yesterday we got a couple of revealing shots of Tom Hardy as Bane, and now today we've got a look of him and Christian Bale as Batman duking it out.  Enjoy, courtesy of our friends at Batman-News....

The snow should look pretty sweet once the final touches are added. One thing that's clear is that at this point of the film, Batman is sporting the same costume. In the shots we saw yesterday of Bane standing on the Tumbler, it had a different appearance. Camouflaged. I imagine Bats will get an upgrade as well.

Yippee Kai Yay!! Noam Murro drops out of directing Die Hard 5

For all the talk we've heard from Bruce Willis and Fox about Die Hard 5, there really hasn't been all that much movement on it. I mean it's not like we know when it'll shoot, or when it will be released. Or even who'll star in it other than Bruce Willis reprising his role as the dirty tank-topped cop, John McClain. And the one hard piece of information we did have on it is has crashed and burned, as Twitch reports that Noam Murro(Smart People) has dropped out of directing the film. Can they just kill the entire idea now?

Tops at the Box Office: Cowboys, Aliens, and Smurfs share a piece of the top spot

 1. Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs- $36.2M
Yep, that's right. It's a tie between the live-action/animated version of The Smurfs and Jon Favreau's summer tentpole featuring two of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Indiana Jones(Harrison Ford) and James Bond(Daniel Craig) couldn't put the little blue runts down for the count, which I'm guessing won't make producers Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard very happy. Especially after 14 years of development. On the one hand it makes for one of the most successful "western" openings ever, and for the unproven Craig it ranks as one of his best as well. But with that expensive cast and massive budget($150M+), it looks like a major fail.  As for The Smurfs? It opened at over 400 few theaters than C&A, and still matched it. There's something to be said for the family friendly nature of it, and the fact that these CGI flicks have been like printing money lately. Still, almost nobody would have predicted this outcome. The first of a planned trilogy, I think we can certainly count on seeing the sequel within the next two years.

And The Smurfs take Manhattan? We'll also take a look at the CGI/Live-action rebirth of The Smurfs! Feel free to call in and join us tonight at 7pm eastern, courtesy of our friends at Blogtalkradio!

New photos from Carnage, starring Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz, and Jodie Foster

The fall season is when acting is supposed to step to the forefront, and perhaps there'll be no better example of that than Roman Polanski's next film, Carnage. Due out on November 18th, it features John C. Reilly, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz, and Kate Winslet as two upper middle class couples meeting for dinner after their kids get into a fight in school.  Based on Yasmina Reza's acclaimed stageplay, I'd look for sharp, cutting verbal wounds over brawling action. This one should be amazing.

Carnage will be premiering at the Venice International Film Festival, before making it's US premier at the New York festival. Filmspoons has a few new photos from the film, which don't say a whole lot except that maybe the tone will be a bit lighter than it sounds.

The Sunday Drive: 7/31/11

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 2
Destinies fulfilled and unexpected heroes rise to prominence as the epic clash of good and evil reaches it's ultimate conclusion. The final chapter of Harry Potter's war with Voldemort is a more than satisfying end to the most successful franchise in history.

New The Dark Knight Rises set photos give another look at Tom Hardy as Bane

Ever since we got that first glimpse of Tom Hardy as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, we've been treated to a teaser trailer which didn't show a whole lot, and nothing of the many other characters populating Christopher Nolan's Bat-finale. The film is currently shooting in Pittsburgh, and some new set photos have provided us another look at Bane...
That shot courtesy of the Bat-fanatics at Batman-News. JustJared has a bunch more similar shots, which you can check out here.

Simon Pegg headlines A Fantastic Fear of Everything

I get a little worried anytime Simon Pegg takes on a film I know nothing about. He's awesome when working with Edgar Wright and Nick Frost, and as part of his share of franchise flicks(Mission: Impossible, Star Trek). But there's always the fear he'll do another Run Fatboy Run, or How to Lose Friends and Alienate People. Here's hoping this next project turns out better than those.

Chuck Norris, John Travolta part of The Expendables 2?

Simon West(The Mechanic, Con Air) is the man who'll be spearheading The Expendables 2, which guarantees us all more geriatric, BenGay stinking musclebound action.  Part of the fun of the first film came months before shooting had even begun, as literally every 1980s cheeseball who ever held a gun bigger than his head was invited to participate. The Expendables might've been a disappointment, but the build up was awesome.  So far the rumors floating around the sequel have been pretty much the same.  Jean Claude Van Damme joining, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger with expanded roles...yadda yadda.

Well now there are a couple of new potentials to add to the list, only one of which might be something of a surprise. David Varodd, CEO of Nu Boyana studios in Bulgaria was giving an interview with Novinite and said this...

Trailer Time: In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried

The newest trailer for In Time muddies the waters a little bit. The footage we were treated to a few days ago makes the world Andrew Niccol(Gattaca) has created much clearer, but key points are left out this time. Instead what we get are a bunch of random action scenes with Justin Timberlake, and snippets of dialogue that amount to nothing.

New photos from The Avengers teaser trailer

So you didn't wanna go see Captain America: The First Avenger to get a glimpse at the teaser trailer for The Avengers. The bootleg isn't good enough quality. And yet you don't want to watch the short clip of the trailer we posted last night. Well then screw you then. You're just too damned picky. Just kidding, of course. We're still gonna hook you up a little, by giving you a chance to see the entire team from Marvel's upcoming flick in these still shots taken from the trailer. I was sorta hoping for a look at Cobie Smulders as SHIELD agent Maria Hill, but it'll just have to wait. By the way, that cool ass poster you see isn't anything official, just something the good folks over at Comic Book Movie found.

Pre-Order Star Wars: the Complete Saga on Blu-Ray for $89.99

And chances are you'll do it again anyway, because we all want to watch Star Wars on crystal clear Blu-Ray. You can now pre-order Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-Ray for the low price of only $89.99. That's $50 less than what you'll pay in stores. And of course with Amazon's Pre-Order Price Guarantee, if the price should drop between now and the September 16th release date, you'll be charged the lowest amount. Order yours today!

Trailer Time: Red Tails, produced by George Lucas

Red Tails isn't the first film to cover the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, the group of African-American fighter pilots who fought bravely during WWII. However it may end up being the best, if this new trailer is any indication.  Featuring a story by producer George Lucas(yes, that George Lucas) and a script by John Ridley(Three Kings), it features an expansive cast including Terrence Howard, Ne-Yo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bryan Cranston, David Oyelowo, Method Man, Tristan Wilds, Lee Tergesen, and many more. Anthony Hemingway(The Wire) directed, although Lucas himself took over on reshoots while Hemingway was off doing work on the HBO series, Treme.  Check out the trailer below...

Pretty damn intense. Certainly looks better than the Tuskegee Airmen's last big screen appearance as a cameo in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. It also looks like Lucas has spared no expense in making the time period as authentic as possible.

Red Tails is due to hit theaters on January 20th 2012, which is a busy week for the typically slow month. Underworld: Awakening and Steven Soderbergh's revenge flick, Haywire, also come out that day.

Antoine Fuqua to direct crime drama, Storming Las Vegas

Antoine Fuqua is a solid director. Always has been, but I find it kinda humorous that after arguably his weakest film, Brooklyn's Finest, the director is suddenly at his busiest. He's got so many projects lined up I'm wondering if he's not the long lost African-American brother of Robert Rodriguez. After flip flopping on it, Fuqua is back directing his 2pac biopic. He's got some sort of Chinese epic set during the Tang Dynasty. And let's not forget he'll direct Southpaw, the boxing drama starring Eminem. The crazy thing is that's only half the films Fuqua's name is attached to. But who's counting?

Willem Dafoe circles role in Pacific Rim; Rob Kazinsky confirmed

The presence of Willem Dafoe in any film pretty much guarantees you're in for a helter skelter experience. When was the last time he was in anything remotely....normal? Safe? Spider-Man 3? And he was wacko in that. To me, that bodes extremely well for Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming monster invasion film, Pacific Rim, as Variety reports Dafoe has entered early talks to join it. He'd play a "rogue scientist" with expertise on aliens. How exactly did he come about this knowledge? Hmmmmm...

In addition, British actor Rob Kazinsky(EastEnders), last seen dropping out of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit due to personal reasons, has been confirmed as one of the humans fighting to defend the planet. Our friends over at ThePlaylist seem to think he could play the brother of Charlie Hunnam's character. Idris Elba, Rinku Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Max Martini are also set to star.

Pacific Rim is based on a highly regarded script by Travis Beacham, which at first was rumored to be the basis for a Godzilla relaunch(it wasn't). It tells the story of how humans come together using futuristic weaponry and piloting mechs in order to hold back a monster invasion. The film is due to be released on July 12th 2013.

Kathryn Bigelow's Seal Team 6 film tracks down a release date

One of the stories to emerge out of the death of Osama Bin Laden was that Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, the duo behind The Hurt Locker, had been secretly following the elite team for months in preparation of an upcoming film. It would tell the story of Seal Team 6's pursuit of the terrorist leader, but with his death Boal would have to do some working of the film's conclusion to include that fatal firefight.  Originally going under the working title of Kill Bin Laden, it's been extremely quiet on that front for awhile now. We haven't anything about whether Joel Edgerton(Animal Kingdom, Warrior) would star, after being attached to it at one point. So what's going on? Is this even still happening? Or has the fact that half a dozen Seal Team 6 films are now in the works scared Bigelow and Co. off?

Apparently not, as Deadline reports the still untitled war flick now has a release date: October 12th 2012. That puts it smack dab in the middle of awards season, which you can bet is no accident. Expect Columbia Pictures to put the full power of their marketing department behind this one next year. The question is whether or not people will even care about this story. The unity and pride we all felt after Bin Laden's death has dissipated already, and movies about the "War on Terror" aren't any more popular.

Sure Shots: Olivia Wilde; Kevin Bacon; Joe Pesci sues the producers of Gotti film

* Olivia Wilde will have two movies coming out in the span of two weeks: Cowboys & Aliens, and The Change-Up. By the end of 2011 she'll likely appear in at least two more, so it's safe to say she's in pretty high demand right now. That gives her the chance to pretty much have the run of any role she wants, and right now what she's considering is the opportunity to play ex-porn star Linda Lovelace in one of two competing biopics. This isn't the one that was going to star Lindsay Lohan(now with Malin Akerman). This pic is from directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman(Howl) and a script by the writer of Temple Grandin. At one point Kate Hudson and James Franco were attached, but nothing's been heard about that for months. [E!Online]

* Kevin Bacon has entered talks to play the bad guy(yet again!!) in R.I.P.D., the comic book adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges as a pair of undead cops working the supernatural beat. Robert Schwentke(Red, Flightplan) is directing, based on a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi(Aeon Flux). No word yet on whether Jodie Foster, rumored to be joining a few months ago, has signed. For Bacon, this'll be the fourth straight time he's played villain! I think that indie flick, The Woodsman, was something of a turning point for him. He's been tackling darker stuff ever since.

* Did they think he was funny? Like a clown or something? Joe Pesci has filed a lawsuit against the producers of Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father(formerly Gotti: Three Generations), which makes me think he ain't gonna be involved anymore. After signing on to play the role of high ranking mobster Angelo Ruggiero for a fee of $3M, Pesci gained 30lbs for the part. The producers did what they've been doing all along, which is exploit Pesci's presence(remember how they used Lindsay Lohan for awhile?), then cut his salary to $1M and gave him a totally different character to play. Pesci understandably was not pleased. Shooting is set to begin in just a couple of months, so although I could care less about this film I want to see how this whole thing plays out. It appears that John Travolta(as John Gotti) and Al Pacino are still confirmed. For now. [TMZ]

The Smurfs, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Hank Azaria

Let's face it, all of our favorite Saturday morning cartoons will be converted to live-action  CGI dreck before we're dead and gone. Within the last few years we've been disgusted by the awfulness of Alvin and Chipmunks(twice!!!) and last year's Yogi Bear. The easy analysis is that these are so popular(and the box office proves they are) because they appeal to little kids. This is completely untrue. No child gives a hoot who Yogi Bear is or is concerned whether the Chipmunks are really lip syncing. These work because they play upon the childhood memory of adults who grew up in the 70s and 80s. Adults keep these movies afloat, and so that's why we keep getting more of them.

Such is the case with The Smurfs, a cartoon with a great lineage all it's own. Created by the Belgian artist Peyo back in 1958, the little blue creatures(three apples tall!) would make their way to the United States with their own Saturday cartoon series in 1981. It's arguably the most popular morning cartoon in television history, running for nine years and long after that in reruns.

But it's the film that matters now, placed in the hands of Beverly Hills Chihuahua director Raja Gosnell, and you'll be surprised to know it's not all that bad. Shot in 3D, The Smurfs takes us through a whirlwind tour of Smurf village. We're quickly introduced to the magical creatures, each limited personality wise by whatever their name concludes them to be: Brainy Smurf is a bifocal wearing nerd; Clumsy Smurf is...clumsy; Vanity Smurf stares at his mirror all day. I know some women like him.  And then there are the two oddballs like Papa Smurf(voiced by Jonathan Winters) and Smurfette(Katy Perry). Smurfette is the only female in town, which should make nights out at the drive-in a little awkward. Papa Smurf is the centuries old patriarch, who keeps his family safe via magic spells conjured up in his mushroom home. The only thing keeping them from a perfect existence is the presence of a human named Gargamel(Hank Azaria), an oafish wizard who wants to use Smurf body acids to power his magic. Seriously smurfed up.
