New poster for The Green Hornet

I have little to no faith in The Green Hornet being any good. Call me a stick in the mud, but Seth Rogen featured in an overly comedic take on the hard boiled crime fighting hero just doesn't do much for me at all. The trailer from a couple months ago didn't instill me with much confidence, either. You've got one of the most imaginative directors working today in Michel Gondry(Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and it still looks generic. Not a good sign.

Anyway, a new poster for the film has been released and I like this one much better than the other ones we've seen. Maybe it's the overhead angle and the darker tone giving the impression that this will be a more serious film than it actually will be. Or maybe it's just how cool the Green Hornet logo looks in the emerald headlights.

The Green Hornet stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, and Tom Wilkinson. It's due to hit theaters on January 14th, 2011.

1st Look at Man on a Ledge, featuring Sam Worthington...on a ledge

The last time we covered anything regarding Man on a Ledge, the Sam Worthington starring heist thriller from director Asger Leth, Anthony Mackie and Jamie  Bell had just signed on. Since then, Elizabeth Banks has been added, along with Ed Burns, and now Ed Harris. So while Worthington doesn't interest me at all, the company surrounding him is stellar.

Worthington stars as an ex-cop, now a wanted fugitive, perched on the ledge of a building while cops attempt to talk him down. But is his predicament a legit one? Or is it just the setup to a grander scheme?

We've got the first promotional shot from the film, and it features Worthington perched on a ledge. Simple, but effective. Check it out below followed by a few words from Summit Entertainment about the flick...

An ex-cop and now wanted fugitive (Sam Worthington) stands on the ledge of a high-rise building while a hard-living New York Police Department hostage negotiator (Elizabeth Banks) tries to talk him down. The longer they are on the ledge, the more she realizes that he might have an ulterior objective.

The ensemble cast includes Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), who portrays Worthington’s best friend and ally and Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) who is Worthington’s younger brother and ardent supporter. Also along for the ride is four-time Oscar® nominee, Ed Harris (Pollock) who plays a powerful businessman, while Edward Burns (27 Dresses) is a rival negotiator who tries to swoop in when he believes Banks has a conflict of interest. Newcomer Genesis Rodriguez (Casa di me Padre) plays Bell’s girlfriend who along with Bell, tries to prove Worthington’s innocence.

Tops at the Box Office

1. Saw 3D- $24.2M
Pitched as the "final" chapter in the years long Saw series, Saw 3D out performed last year's woeful effort by $10M. It's still way off in comparison to when Saw was in it's heyday. This one had the included help of increased 3D ticket pricing, so while attendance is certainly down profits more than make up the difference.
2. Paranormal Activity 2- $16.5M/$65.7M
Paranormal Activity nearly sent Saw into early retirement last year, and it may out perform it again this year as well. However in it's second week, PA2 dropped 59%, a bit hefty even for horror. At this rate it's not going to surpass Paranormal Activity's total, but certainly this is a respectable number after only two weeks.
3. Red- $10.8M/$58.9M
4. Jackass 3D- $8.43M/$102M
5. Hereafter- $6.25M/$22.2M
Even though the total number of sites showing Clint Eastwood's latest rose by nearly 300, it still dipped 47%. Ouch.
6. Secretariat- $5.07M/$44.8M
Tied with Red for the smallest drop of the week, Secretariat continues to hold strong even if the overall total isn't that high.
7. The Social Network- $4.7M/$79.7M
8. Life as We Know It- $4.1M/$43.6M
9. The Town- $2M/$87.7M
10. Conviction- $1.82M/$2.38M
Nice to see the Hilary Swank/Sam Rockwell docudrama getting some love, as it expanded to more than 500 sites this week. However the total is still pretty mediocre. Perhaps the increased ad campaign and eventual Oscar buzz for the two stars will give it a push.

DVD Deal of the Day: Robocop Trilogy (Blu-Ray)

While Darren Aronofsky's proposed reboot of  Robocop may be on death row, there's no reason you can't ride along on patrol with the cyborg upholder of the law one more time in full Blu-Ray glory. In this set you'll get all three Robocop flicks, the first directed by Paul Verhoeven(Total Recall). Unfortunately what you don't get is the underrated TV miniseries, Robocop: Prime Directives. Do yourself a favor and pick that up as well. It's a must for die-hard Robocop fanatics.

Review

RoboCop 1
From the director of Total Recall comes a high-adrenaline,“sleek” (Time) sci-fi thriller about a policeman who’s half man, half machine. When a good cop (Peter Weller) is murdered by criminals, innovative scientists piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called RoboCop. Tormented by the memory of his death, he is out for justice – and revenge.

RoboCop 2
Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to battle his toughest opponent yet: his replacement! But not only is the new cyborg’s weaponry more sophisticated than Robocop’s, it contains the brain of a madman! It will take everything Robocop has to save Detroit -- and himself -- from total destruction.

RoboCop 3
It’s Megacop vs. Megacorp in this edge-of-your-seat sci-fi action film. When a ruthless corporation that has
a stranglehold on Motor City begins kicking families out of their homes for a new real estate project, Robocop (Robert Burke) and a band of renegades fight to save them in an all-out battle for Detroit.

The Sunday Drive: 10/31/10

3. Jackass 3D
You'd be surprised how funny it still is to watch Johnny Knoxville get steamrolled by a bull, even after all these years. Do yourself a favor and check it out in 3D before it goes away.
2. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest
We've been lucky enough to receive all three chapters of the Millennium trilogy, based on Stieg Larsson's wildly popular series of crime novels, in one calandar year. The final film wraps the somber series up by pitting hard edged computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander, and her dashing hero Mikael Blomqvist, against the men responsible for ruining her life since day one. A satisfying conclusion that only makes me more interested in David Fincher's upcoming remakes.
1. Paranormal Activity 2
Saw 3D sucked. So if you're going to spend your money this Halloween on a flick that's going to make you jump out of your chair, the sequel to last year's hit is the way to go. More victims, more scares, and a story that actually elevates the first film and establishes Paranormal Activity as a credible, strengthening horror franchise.

DVD Pick of the Week: Winter's Bone
Part mystery, part crime drama set in the heart of the Ozarks. Jennifer Lawrence gives what I think is an Oscar worthy turn as Ree Dolly, a headstrong teenage girl forced to care for her sick mom and two siblings while her drug dealing father is in and out of prison. When he puts their house up for bond and skips town without their knowledge, it's up to Ree to go toe-to-toe with the secretive, protective inhabitants of her town, most of which are her kin, to find him.

Sure Shots: Liev Schreiber; Noomi Rapace; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

* Liev Schreiber appears to have swept the lead role in Brad Anderson's upcoming film, Jack, away from John Cusack. He's been offered the part of an amnesiac killer, experiencing resurfacing memories just as he's fallen in love with a doctor. Samuel L. Jackson is on board for an unspecified role, as well. Brad Anderson's most recent film was in my top 10 of 2008, the mystery/thriller on a train, Transsiberian.

* Noomi Rapace, who has captivated audiences as Lisbeth Salander in the Millennium trilogy of flicks, is all over the place. Not only is she set for the Sherlock Holmes sequel, but she's also been in talks for Ridley Scott's Alien prequel. But she's also got work back in her native Sweden, as she'll be taking on the role of cabaret singer Anita Lindblom, wife of Swedish boxing legend Bo Hogberg in a biopic on his life. The interesting note? Hogberg will be portrayed by Noomi's recent ex-husband, Ola Rapace.  She's on the market, ya'll!

* Somebody out there wants yet another Texas Chainsaw Massacre flick, and that guy certainly isn't me. But since Twisted Pictures is dead set on giving us another one, might as well report on the goings on. This latest news probably won't inspire too many of Leatherface's fans, but Adam Marcus and Debra Sullivan have been brought on to script the upcoming horror. If the name Adam Marcus sounds vaguely familiar, it's because he directed the ultra crappy Jason Goes to Hell back in 1993. God I'm old.

Johnny Depp offered Snow White and the Huntsman lead

Just a couple of days ago we learned that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were the top choices to lead Snow White and the Huntsman, the modernized adult-themed take on the classic fairy tale. The film has become the hot property over the last week, with news on the production dropping every other day it seems. Well, now you can add one more huge development, as Hardy is apparently out and Johnny Depp now being made an official offer for the lead role.

With Hardy's schedule all but booked up thanks to his long since verified role in The Dark Knight Rises, not to mention McG's This Means War, there was little chance he'd be able to squeeze this rapidly growing project into his schedule.

Snow White and the Huntsman has been all the buzz thanks to the script by Evan Daugherty(Grayskull), and the hiring of Rupert Sanders as director. With a ton of Snow White projects currently in development, this one has the most going for it by far. The story would be a reimagining of sorts, focusing on Eric the Huntsman, sent by the evil queen to track down and kill Snow White. In this version, he refuses to complete the job and instead goes on the run with her.

I haven't been much of a fan of Depp as an actor lately, but that's mostly because he's been playing cartoon characters in Tim Burton flicks for the last ten years. This might be a chance to see him really flex his acting muscles again, but only time will tell. I still would've preferred Hardy, because I want to see him have as many chances as possible to become a household name. Inception was just the start.

Entertainment Tonight's Transformers: Dark of the Moon set visit

I grow weary of Entertainment Tonight's frantic set visits, but there's no denying they're often very cool. This one is no different, as they take us behind the scenes of Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Expect plenty of ET's chatty, giggly, irritating hosts, not to mention plenty of Bay-endorsed explosions. Enjoy, and try not to laugh when Michael Bay says it's full of "rich characters". That'd be a first.

Saw 3D

One of the things I could always say I supported about the Saw series was that it stuck to it's grisly narrative like a mole on Angelina Jolie's face. The first flick was gritty, nasty, and had the feeling of a one-shot of adrenaline never to be experienced again. But when it became such a blockbuster hit and sequels were demanded, a different path had to be taken. From then on, Jigsaw has been positioned mostly as a justice seeker, punishing his foes with deadly and ironic trials the likes of which should make our skin crawl. What also happened was that an entire world was built around Jigsaw. A team of followers and apprentices rounded into form, all gathered using Jigsaw's ridiculously accurate gift of foresight. This fleshed out the story and ultimate changed Saw from the film that sparked the "torture porn" genre into an intricate, somewhat convoluted story.

The "final" installment pits Detective Mark Hoffman(Costas Mandylor), the current Jigsaw, against Bobby Dagen(Sean Patrick Flannery), a self help guru with a grisly backstory. A former Jigsaw survivor who's used his past as a springboard to fame, his popularity doesn't exactly make our favorite killer a happy man. Meanwhile you can expect more of the seemingly endless supply of hapless keystone cops who think they're hot on the Jigsaw's trail. They must buy these idiot coppers by the gross. They could fill five movies just on the number of detectives put in charge of the Jigsaw case, only to wind up as stains on the floor.

There's no faster way to annoy me than to not give me what's promised, and Saw 3D pitched itself as being Jigsaw's greatest test yet. The ads promised that Jigsaw would be taking his gruesome ritual to the public, making his corrupted victims' trials a matter of media attention. We actually do get that....for about 2 minutes. In an awkward, inexplicable opening sequence, a love triangle stands exposed in a store window, with the cheating girlfriend literally split between her two lovers. Why would the meticulous, rational(if sadistic) Jigsaw reduce himself in such a way? The victims aren't part of a larger narrative. They're just three random folks off the street. It makes no sense, and strikes me as someone in a production meeting coming up with a "cool" idea he wanted to show off.

Unfortunately that's how the entire film feels, like an exercise in showing off just one last time. Even though I never really liked the previous Saw flicks, they rewarded their fans and genuinely made each film seem relevant. A throwaway scene in Saw 2 might be a crucial plot point in Saw 5. It was what I admired most. This is the first time in years that I feel like no plan was ever in place. It was truly a "let's throw everything against a wall and see what sticks" mentality, especially when it pertains to the return of one of Saw's most beloved characters: Dr. Lawrence Gordon(Carey Elwes). Yes, the Jigsaw's first and most asked about suvivor returns, but to say he's become a changed man over the years is an understatement. A half hearted attempt at the conclusion to explain his transformation is...well, half hearted. Frankly, Saw has been struggling ever since the poorly thought out idea of kiling off the original Jigsaw, John Kramer(Tobin Bell). Detective Hoffman just isn't as sympathetic a figure.

The venerable old Saw series took a pounding last year at the hands of Paranormal Activity, which helped necessitate a speedier wrap-up to the franchise. It also was the impetus for the jump to the more expensive 3D format. To put it  bluntly: The 3D sucks, and adds nothing of worth. A few spatters of blood headed in your direction isn't worth the extra dough you'll be shelling out. Chances are Saw 3D will find a bit more elbow room in the horror market this year, but that's not enough to justify keeping it going. Even though the door is very clearly left open for more flicks in the future, I hope Jigsaw can pass one final test and go off into retirement quietly.

They're crazy putting Snow White and the Huntsman head-to-head with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. There's now way that date sticks, no matter who they get to star in it. A lot of these movies haven't even begun the processing of casting, but that'll probably change now.

1st official movie poster for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, featuring Shockwave!

We just got our first look at the logo for Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and now we've got what appears to be the first official poster for the threequel. What I find most curious about it, other than wondering where exactly this picture was snapped, is the tagline:  "Be Afraid of the Dark".  Seriously?  Is this a horror? Did Michael Bay hand the franchise over to Platinum Dunes and we not get told?

But what's cool is that we also get our first look at Shockwave, the Decepticon leader on Cybertron who figures to be a major factor in the film. Ok, so maybe "cool" is the wrong word. Interesting, I guess. In sticking with the established tradition of these flicks, Shockwave doesn't look at all like his toy counterpart with the exception of a singular eye.   He actually looks more like an OMAC(that's for DC comics fans) than Shockwave.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is due to hit theaters on July 1st, 2011.

So who'll Wolverine be going claw-to-sword with in the film sequel?

With Darren Aronofsky on board to direct Hugh Jackman in the Wolverine sequel, my anticipation for it has skyrocketed. The first film was kindof a disaster that had no idea where it wanted to go, but the follow-up has sounded great almost from the word "Go". The classic Claremont/Miller tale of Wolvie's journey to Japan is a perfect story to adapt, and if you've already read it(as I have many times) then you probably already know the characters involved. But if you don't, Pajiba has(or had, as the studio made them take it down) a list of the film's characters along with minor descriptions of each. Since they were taken down, I got this from our friends over at Bleeding Cool. Thanks!

Zen: A Japanese man “who arranges for Logan’s release” from a Candian prison and “offers to answer questions about his origin if he’ll accompany him to Tokyo”.

Shingen: Shingen’s father was the master of The Hand, an order of ninja. Instead of allowing his son to take leadership of the order, Shingen’s father killed himself and left the Hand without a master.

Kenuichio: Shingen’s illegitimate son, but not recognised as an heir. An expert Samurai, he will adopt his “Silver Samurai” guise in the movie and attack Logan “several times”.

Mariko: Shingen’s daughter, and Logan’s chief love interest.

Yukio: Logan’s bodyguard and lust interest.

Frank Sinatra: “Japan’s answer to Frank Sinatra. A Yakuza higher-up who provides Logan with information”.

More Captain America photos! The Red Skull revealed!

Hey look! It's Captain America's inexplicably loved triangle shield! Yesterday we got the first look at Chris Evans in his full Cap gear, and now we've got even more photos from the Entertainment Weekly article. We're even graced with our first look at Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull. He's not quite all red and...skully yet, but at least he's not Italian like in the first Captain America movie. That was a ridiculous error on their part. Check 'em out for yourself!

Tron Legacy video clip: The Light Runner

They showed an expanded version of this clip, titled The Light Runner, at last night's Tron Night event. Audiences were shown 23 minutes of unseen footage from the highly anticipated Tron Legacy, and all I can say is that when it was over I would've done really awful things for them to just show us the whole damn movie. It's breathtakingly gorgeous, and the musical score is spot on. Not only does it look modern, but the instant you enter that cold, digital world of Tron it feels instantly familiar. The Light Runner was actually my favorite scene from last night, even though it's basically just Sam Flynn(Garrett Hedlund) and his rescuer, Quorra(Oliva Wilde) driving through the mountains to an undisclosed location(no it's not Dick Cheney's secret lair). I won't reveal where they're headed, but it's pretty cool too! Check it out below, and get yourself ready for Tron Legacy on December 17th!
